Go Ahead and Try: Perseverance Is Your Friend

Snowy Mountain Blues was the last piece I expected to be chosen for the Mazin Art Exhibition at the Trager JCC in the fall of 2023.

Any artist who has put herself out there for a few years or more will tell you—if she’s being honest—that rejection is just part of the game. I’ve been rejected from art shows, not cast in theatre auditions, ignored by publishers, etc. The fact that it happens to everyone doesn’t make it much easier, but if you love the work, you’ll keep on trying. And perhaps, if you don’t give up, in time you’ll experience a breakthrough. That breakthrough will feel incredible because you’ve worked so hard, and now it’s finally happening.

Last year (2023) wasn’t the best for me as an artist. Art sales had been slow while I struggled with some health issues, and by September, my confidence was waning. In the midst of this dry spell, I entered a local art show anyway. I sent photos of my pastels, and as an after thought, I included one of my oil paintings. Maybe they’ll choose one of my pastels at least, I thought., and the oil painting probably has no chance. As it turned out, it was the oil painting that was chosen. You just never know when it comes to art juries.

It was wonderful to have my friend Debra to celebrate with me at the Mosaic Art Gallery opening! My “Prayer and Protest” pastel won third place. The current exhibition “Reformation” will be on display through February 9, 2024.

Shortly after that, I entered a show that included a contest with cash prizes. I was just happy to be accepted into the show, and had forgotten about the contest part when I received an email from the gallery director. He let me know I had won third place and some cash! I hate to admit it, but after years of entering shows, I had yet to win any prizes. So that was an exciting first for me, and a wonderful surprise toward the end of a year that had been difficult.

But the most exciting event of the year happened in December. For years I had a secret dream of becoming an actor, but I had no idea how to go about it and was too embarrassed to even ask. Some dreams are too audacious to mention for shy little girls like me. Over time the desire grew in spite of my social anxiety, so finally in 2020, I took an acting class. I loved it so much, and I fit right in! Since then I’ve been doing all the community theatre I can and taking classes. The dream became to act professionally, and I auditioned for a few local companies, with no luck—until now! I am over the moon that after three years of working toward it, I have my first paid acting job! I get to do a Shakespeare tour this spring.

I hope this is an encouragement to you. I am just the girl next door, nothing special, but I am so thankful to be enjoying this phase of life, and I’m having adventures that I thought were impossible for me. So I encourage you to take the first step toward the secret dream. You never know where it might lead, and chances are you’ll have a great time on the journey and a few great surprises along the way, if you keep on trying.
