Black Lives Matter Exhibition

Art is a powerful way to communicate about profound issues. The Black Lives Matter exhibition in Lexington is filled with moving images, and I’m honored to be a part of it.

The artwork above is entitled “Get Him a Parachute.” The image is taken from the archives of Kentucky Refugee Ministries. The photo I used as a resource depicts a happy little boy, sitting in the folds of a parachute.

Thinking about that image prompted thoughts about how difficult it is for young blacks growing up in the United States. Parents of black children have to give them “the talk” about racism that I never had to give to my children.

As a society, I think it’s time we provide “parachutes” to soften the landing of BIPOC children as they grow into adulthood. This is the meaning behind my artwork for the Black Lives Matter exhibition at the Living Arts and Science Center in Lexington.
